Beyond the Score: How Radians School Helps Every Student Grow and Thrive

Equipped for Life. Built for the Future.

Measuring Growth. Celebrating Progress. Preparing for the Future.

Measuring Growth. Celebrating Progress. Preparing for the Future.

At Radians School, we believe education is far more than a single test score. Every student begins with unique strengths, challenges, and opportunities. Our role is not only to understand where students are today, it is to guide their growth, unlock their potential, and prepare them for the future.

To support this mission, we use NWEA MAP Growth, a nationally recognized assessment that provides meaningful insight into student achievement and academic growth. The data helps us personalize instruction, celebrate progress, and ensure that every learner continues moving forward.

Recognizing Opportunities for Growth

At Radians School, we believe transparency is an important part of continuous improvement.

While several grade levels demonstrated strong academic performance and exceptional growth this year, not every result met the high expectations we set for ourselves. Some grade levels performed below our desired benchmarks in specific academic areas.

Rather than viewing these results as setbacks, we view them as opportunities to strengthen instruction and provide additional support where it is needed most.

Using assessment data, classroom performance, teacher observations, and ongoing progress monitoring, our academic leadership team has already identified targeted action steps for the upcoming school year, including:

  • Enhanced intervention and support programs for students needing additional assistance
  • More frequent progress monitoring throughout the school year
  • Data-driven instructional planning at every grade level
  • Expanded opportunities for personalized learning
  • Additional professional development for teachers in targeted instructional areas
  • Increased collaboration between school and families to support student success

Our goal is simple: ensure that every student, in every grade level, continues to make meaningful academic progress.

Families deserve an honest picture of both our strengths and our opportunities for growth. By continuously analyzing data and adjusting instruction, we ensure that improvement remains an ongoing process rather than a once-a-year event.

What Is MAP Growth?

Unlike traditional tests that provide only a snapshot of performance, it measures two key dimensions:

  • Academic Achievement — where students are performing today compared to peers
  • Academic Growth — how much students improve over time

In simple terms:

  • Achievement tells us where students are
  • Growth tells us how far they’ve come

At Radians School, both matter, but growth is what drives future success.

For a deeper look at these results and the actions we are taking to support student growth, we invite you to watch our podcast.

Understanding RIT Scores

The third party assessment uses a RIT score, which works like an academic “height chart.”

Just as a child’s physical growth is measured over time, RIT scores track academic development year after year.

Figure 1: RIT scores track student growth the same way a height chart tracks physical growth.

Key points:

  • RIT scores typically range from 100 to 350.
  • Higher scores indicate stronger academic skills.
  • The scale is consistent, allowing us to measure true growth over time.

Understanding Percentiles

Percentiles help families understand how students compare to peers nationwide.

  • 40th percentile → performed better than 40% of students
  • 60th percentile → performed better than 60% of students

Figure 2: Percentiles show how students perform relative to others nationwide.

Together:

  • RIT Score = What a student knows.
  • Percentile = How they compare.
  • Growth Percentile = How much they improved.

How Radians Students Are Performing

What does this look like in practice? The chart below highlights how Radians students compare nationally across grade levels.

While this article provides a summary of the findings, our podcast offers a more comprehensive analysis of the data and the strategies behind it.

Grade 6: A Powerful Example of Growth

Grade 6 provides a clear example of how growth transforms into achievement:

Our Grade 6 students demonstrated exceptional progress this year:

  • Moved from the 40th percentile to the 60th percentile
  • Achieved an 84th growth percentile
  • Reached an average RIT score of 228, outperforming the national average of 220

This progress reflects the impact of strong instruction, targeted support, and consistent effort.

“At Radians School, success is not defined by where students start, but by how far they grow.”

Grade 8: Building on a Strong Foundation

Our Grade 8 students continue to show strong performance:

  • Average RIT Score: 244
  • National Average: 237
  • Performance Level: 58th percentile

These results demonstrate steady growth and readiness for more advanced academic challenges.

Grade 11: Preparing for the Future

By Grade 11, the focus expands to college and career readiness, and our students are excelling:

  • Average RIT Score: 251
  • National Average: 231
  • Performance Level: 77th percentile

A 20-point advantage at this level reflects years of sustained growth and preparation.

Turning Data into Action

At Radians School, this external assessment is more than an assessment, it is a roadmap for personalized learning.

Teachers use student data to:

  • Identify strengths and areas for growth
  • Tailor instruction to individual needs
  • Provide targeted intervention
  • Challenge advanced learners
  • Monitor progress in real time

This approach is supported by adaptive learning tools that:

  • Personalize practice
  • Reinforce essential skills
  • Provide real-time feedback
  • Keep families informed

This continuous cycle ensures that every student receives the support needed to succeed.

Our Commitment to Continuous Improvement

While we celebrate our students’ achievements, growth is ongoing.

We remain committed to:

  • Personalizing instruction through data
  • Strengthening targeted interventions
  • Expanding enrichment opportunities
  • Monitoring progress year-round
  • Partnering closely with families

Our goal is not just strong results, but ensuring every student reaches their full potential.

More Than a Test Score

Behind every RIT score, percentile, and chart is a student who has worked hard, overcome challenges, and made meaningful progress.

To better understand the story behind the scores, be sure to watch our podcast discussion on student growth and achievement.

At Radians School, success is not defined by where students begin, or even where they finish, but by how far they grow along the way.

We are proud of our students and committed to helping every learner move forward with confidence, purpose, and excellence.”

Building Character for Life

At Radians School, we believe that education is about more than academic achievement. It is about helping students develop the character, values, and habits that will guide them throughout their lives.

That is why character development is intentionally woven into every aspect of the student experience. Through daily interactions, classroom learning, leadership opportunities, and community involvement, students learn the importance of respect, responsibility, integrity, empathy, and self-discipline.

From our youngest learners through high school, students are encouraged to set meaningful goals, take ownership of their actions, build healthy relationships, and make thoughtful decisions. Through mindfulness practices, social-emotional learning, and character education, they develop the confidence and resilience needed to navigate challenges both in school and beyond.

Our commitment to character development extends beyond individual students. We strive to create a community where families, facilitators, and students work together to foster a culture of trust, accountability, kindness, and mutual respect.

This dedication has earned national recognition. Radians School is proud to be the only school in Puerto Rico recognized by Character.org as a National School of Character, an honor awarded to schools that demonstrate excellence in developing character throughout their entire learning community.

Because we believe that while knowledge opens doors, character determines how far a person will go.

Equipped for Life. Built for the Future.
